For decades, the “C” on a Mets jersey wasn’t just a letter on a jersey; it was an identity. From the fundamentals of Keith Hernandez to the leadership of David Wright, the title of captain carried a heavy weight in Queens. However, in the Steve Cohen era, the captain has faded into the background, and it is no accident.
Cohen has heavily invested in talent, infrastructure, and culture since becoming the Mets’ owner, and despite being a lifelong Mets fan, has not shown urgency in restoring the captain to Queens. A franchise that once relied on a single person to voice the clubhouse, the Mets seem to be transitioning away from this.
